PALLISTER TORIES DECLARE WAR ON NORTH EAST WINNIPEG HEALTH SERVICES
WINNIPEG - Today the Pallister government launched its latest attack on health services in North East Winnipeg by announcing the closure of Concordia Hospital’s Emergency Room.
“The new Conservative government in Manitoba is showing it simply doesn’t care about people in North East Winnipeg,” said Daniel Blaikie, NDP Member of Parliament for Elmwood–Transcona. “Every other part of the city will continue to have either Emergency Room or Urgent Care services, while residents of North East Winnipeg are left with nothing.”
Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of cuts that will have a disproportionate impact on people living in North East Winnipeg. Since being elected, the Pallister government has cancelled the Concordia Hospital Home Team and put the future of Park Manor Personal Care Home’s expansion into doubt. They shut down the closest Quick Care Clinic to North East Winnipeg and are not proceeding with the Quick Care Clinics promised by the previous government for Transcona and East Kildonan.
“It’s an insult to hold up the Park Manor care home expansion, while closing the ER at Concordia because we need more transitional care for patients waiting to get into personal care homes,” said Blaikie. “If a lack of personal care home beds is the problem; build beds, don’t close ERs. The Park Manor project has the plan and has the permits. It’s a shovel-ready project the government could start tomorrow.”
