NDP Calls on Liberals to Advance Visa-Free Access Negotiations with Ukraine

OTTAWA – Today in Question Period, NDP MP Daniel Blaikie (Elmwood-Transcona) called on the Liberal government to make progress on the issue of granting Ukrainians visa-free access to Canada.

The call came after Blaikie joined NDP Defence Critic Randall Garrison at a meeting of the Standing Committee on National Defence on June 12, 2018, where a bi-partisan delegation of Ukrainian MPs gave a presentation on the situation in Ukraine. In response to a question on visa-free travel posed by Garrison, the delegation reported: “Truthfully, at the moment there is no progress.”

“The Liberals committed a year ago to grant visa-free access to Ukrainians, but have not followed up to get the job done,” said Blaikie. “We owe it to our friend, ally and trading partner to take this important step in showing our support and strengthening our relationship with Ukraine.”

Ukraine has already concluded a visa-free access agreement with the European Union, as well as a bilateral trade agreement with Canada. In these circumstances, a visa-free access agreement makes sense and should be concluded without further delay.
